Local authorities & MATs
We are currently working with around 90 organisations, including local authorities (LAs) and multi-academy trusts (MATs) to support their schools and drive efficiency savings.
Benefits of working with us
I find The Key invaluable. We’re lucky enough to still have quite comprehensive support from our LA, but I like to use The Key as well because it gives a national perspective. I sent a question to their researchers, and it was great to be able to park my query with them on a Friday afternoon, knowing I’d get a full answer back the following week. I could leave it to one side instead of worrying about it over the weekend.

Group membership enables schools to access the service at a significantly reduced price.
Free up your advisory staff
Let us become the first port of call on day-to-day issues. This will free up advisory and other staff to spend much more time in schools, providing local expertise and adding maximum value.
Fostering good relationships with schools and their leaders
The Key is an efficient way to ensure school leaders feel well supported in their demanding role.
Embracing the national agenda
The education system is changing rapidly. The Key ensures that schools are kept abreast and informed. Schools can tap into national and international good practice and apply this locally.
Delivering your education strategy
We can support you in delivering the fundamental pillars within your education strategy, including: safeguarding, driving school improvement, raising educational standards, fostering a shared vision and sharing good practice.
Promoting efficiency and new ways of working
The Key is an essential tool in ensuring that schools are not constantly reinventing the wheel. We can reinforce your commitment to ensuring resources are used efficiently and effectively.
Data and insights
With increasing pressure on local advisory teams, many local authorities, MATs and school improvement teams are instead commissioning and brokering services on their schools’ behalf. This allows them to maintain a strong strategic oversight of their schools.
Fergal Roche, CEO, The Key
We can provide data on the way your school leaders use our service, including the questions they ask, sorted by role and phase, size and type of school.
Our data and insights can help you spot gaps and tailor training to local needs and strategy
Resources for your advisers
When a partnership exceeds a minimum percentage of schools, we can offer your advisory staff read-only access to our website.
Autonomy for academies and MATs
The Key provides schools with a robust support system and learnings from around the country – yet also an independent and autonomous way to solve challenges.
We can tailor our approach to suit your requirements and to ensure optimal take-up and engagement with our service. Popular ways to work with us include:
We now know schools's concerns so we can tailor our LA offer to better meet needs. If schools buy The Key individually, then the LA does not have access to this information.
Sue Wilson, formerly head of Cambridgeshire County Council's service for primary schools
- Facilitating subsidised or reduced cost of membership on behalf of schools
- Facilitating contributions from groups of schools, such as primary or secondary heads’ associations
- Including The Key for School Leaders in your service level agreement with schools (basic package, opt-in or opt-out)
- Buying access for all schools, or a set number of schools (single- and multi-year agreements)
Many organisations take a holistic approach, combining The Key for School Leaders with The Key for School Governors. This encourages strategic and operational synergies, and ensures that leaders and governors are singing from the same hymn sheet and working effectively together. "The questions that school leaders and governors now come to the Trust with are much more focussed, which means that it saves us time and therefore money."
Bob Anderson, Director of HR and Governance at The Elliot Foundation
