Staff shortages: If you're an early years setting and are experiencing staff shortages due to COVID-19, you can temporarily change the staff-to-child ratios set out in the EYFS, as the government considers COVID-19 to be an exceptional circumstance. You might, for example, put children in mixed age groups. Work with your local authority (LA) and other settings, or take on qualified and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked staff from other educational settings, where available Restricting attendance: If you need to restrict attendance due to staff shortages, prioritise: Children of critical workers, and vulnerable children, including those not officially in statutory systems but who may have challenging circumstances at home Then 3- and 4-year-olds, especially those who will be transitioning to reception Then younger age groups Self-isolation: Children (including those aged 0 to 4) and staff should return to their early years setting as soon as self-isolation
