You must use the DfE's template to publish your strategy statement on your website

You can find the template on the DfE website.

Please note: make sure you download the latest version of the template, as there have been some small changes to Part B of the template for this academic year. The changes reflect the different kinds of information you can publish about outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

When you must publish your statement

You must complete and publish your strategy statement for the 2023/24 academic year by the end of December 2023.

The DfE will perform monitoring checks on a sample of schools' published statements.

What your statement must include

  • An overview of your school and pupil premium details, including the:
    • Number of pupils in school
    • Proportion of eligible pupils
    • Years your strategy covers
  • A funding overview, covering:
    • Pupil premium and recovery premium allocations for this academic year
    • Pupil premium carried forward from previous years
    • Total budget for this academic year

You must also include for the current academic year (part A of the template):

  • A statement of intent
  • A summary of the main challenges to educational achievement faced by eligible pupils
  • The outcomes you're aiming for by the end of this strategy plan
  • How the pupil premium allocation will be spent to address those challenges and the evidence/reasons for your approach

And for the previous academic year (part B of the template), you must:

  • Outline the performance of your disadvantaged pupils
  • Explain how you've assessed disadvantaged pupils' performance
  • Include the names of any non-DfE programmes you purchased in the previous academic year

Part B also includes optional sections on the service pupil premium and space for you to provide any further information you think is important.

This is outlined in the DfE's guidance on the pupil premium. You can also see example statements for primary, secondary and special schools.

Academies: check if your funding agreement requires you to publish anything different.

You must demonstrate the evidence basis for your spending

Show how your spending strategy is informed by research evidence, referring to a range of sources, including the toolkit published by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). The DfE says this in the conditions of grant.

Activities must be chosen from the DfE's menu of approaches.

Please note: in the links below, see the most recent statements for examples that are in the required format. Statements from previous years may not be published using the template.
