Make the decision on a case-by-case basis

To decide if a pupil needs an individual risk assessment, focus on the pupil's specific needs.

You'll want to:

  • Find out as much information about their needs as you can – ask the pupil, their parents/carers and any healthcare professional who'll be supporting them
  • Check if the pupil has an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan, which should outline the additional support they need and cover areas of potential risk
  • Have a system in place that allows you to regularly review the pupil's needs, as these can change over time

When you know what the pupil's needs are, you can assess whether they're at higher risk and/or if their needs create additional risks.
