Use this template before a pupil who uses crutches starts or returns to school. The person responsible for health and safety in your school (usually the headteacher) should fill it in.

You'll want to:

  • Consult:
    • The pupil and their parents
    • Any staff members who may be affected, including teachers and site staff
  • Adapt it based on the specific circumstances of your school

Make sure you have a personal emergency evacuation plan (PEEP) to go alongside this assessment.

Example from the Northern Ireland government

Northern Ireland's Education Authority has a sample risk assessment for pupils on crutches.

It covers areas such as:

  • Access to the school
  • Circulation space around the school
  • Housekeeping
  • Bathrooms
