This article summarises the Standards and Testing Agency (STA)’s assessment and reporting arrangements for Key Stage (KS) 1 tests in 2022. 

What tests are taken?

The Key Stage (KS) 1 SATs consist of:

  • English reading paper 1: combined reading prompt and answer booklet
  • English reading paper 2: reading booklet and reading answer booklet
  • Maths paper 1: arithmetic
  • Maths paper 2: reasoning

You can also choose to administer an optional English grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS) test - this can be used to inform your writing teacher assessments. It'll be available to download from the Primary Assessment Gateway from Tuesday 3 May (section 5.1).

Resitting the phonics screening check in year 2

Pupils in year 2 who didn't reach the required standard or missed the phonics test in year 1 may need to retake the phonics screening check (section 2.1).
