How to make changes to your RSHE curriculum and policy

With new guidance in force from September 2026, understand the process of updating your relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) curriculum and policy.

You need to update your policy and curriculum in time for September 2026

The DfE’s updated RSHE guidance comes into effect then, but you can start following it sooner if you wish, and/or treat this school year as a transition period between your current RSHE offer and what you'll teach pupils from September 2026.

By September 2026, you'll need to:

  1. Update your RSHE curriculum to meet the new requirements
  2. Review your RSHE policy, including consulting parents/carers, and make any changes so it’s in line with the latest guidance
  3. Share your RSHE curriculum, policy and curriculum materials with parents/carers, and your whole school community, and make sure they're available for all to access
