How can we challenge the most able pupils under the primary curriculum? We relay advice from one of our associate education experts on providing challenge within the National Curriculum, and introducing curriculum content early.

This article contains reference to provision for 'the most able' pupils as well as to 'gifted and talented' pupils.

The terms 'most able' and 'gifted and talented' (G&T) are used here interchangeably; 'the most able pupils' is the phrase currently used by the Department for Education (DfE) and Ofsted.

Using the curriculum to challenge the most able

We asked Mark Trusson, one of The Key’s associate education experts, how the most able pupils can be challenged under the National Curriculum.

Mark said that the National Curriculum is less prescriptive than previous programmes of study. This allows schools greater flexibility to tailor study programmes to the needs of their pupils.
