Who this applies to

The DfE's statutory careers guidance applies to:

  • All maintained schools, including maintained special schools and pupil referral units in England
  • Academies and free schools in England (including alternative provision (AP) academies and free schools)

The requirements do not apply to non-maintained special schools and independent schools.

Changes from September 2022

Please note: we've asked the DfE to clarify inconsistencies in its statutory guidance - page 5 states that you must provide careers advice for pupils in years 7 to 13, but later says you must give education and training providers access to all pupils in years 8 to 13. We'll update this article as soon as we hear more. Click
