Be clear on the revised GCSEs from September 2024

Following a consultation by the DfE, language GCSEs will be revised to focus on the most common vocabulary used in conversations and writing, as well as grammar and pronunciation.

You'll need to start teaching the revised GCSEs from September 2024, for first examination in summer 2026.

The specific changes include:

  • Assessing pupils on 'word families' – 1,200 at the foundation tier and 1,700 at the higher tier (e.g. 'manage', 'managed' and 'manager' are in the same word family). At least 85% of word families will be chosen from the 2,000 most frequently occurring word families in a language 
  • Exam boards choosing topics and themes to inform the selection of key vocabulary, rather than being prescribed in the subject content
