Learn from an 'outstanding' all-through special school how to baseline, assess and analyse the progress of your pupils, in 5 simple steps.

1. Assess pupils on entry, to get a baseline

Frank Wise School, an all-through special school in Oxfordshire, developed their own formative assessment system.

Staff at the school assess children when they join (whether this is in reception or further up the school) using a series of diagnostic assessments. 

These assessments:

  • Cover various areas of development such as fine movement skills, play skills and visual perception
  • Are carried out by a class teacher, assisted by a member of SLT if necessary
  • Progress in difficulty, from easier assessments (e.g. point and response) to harder ones (e.g. numeracy) so teachers can work their way through and stop where appropriate
  • Are based around their own curriculum, 'The Intellectual and Reasoning Skills curriculum'
