Our model policy:

  • Is in line with the statutory Working together to improve school attendance guidance, as well as relevant requirements and good practice
  • Is designed for your school to adapt

  • Includes editable sections for EYFS providers (emergency contacts in section 3.7 and a new section on prolonged absence in section 7.4)

Changes for summer 2026 We've made some minor changes to our model policy to reflect the new resources and guidance published by the DfE. Your current policy will still be compliant with statutory requirements, but consider these best-practice changes when you come to review your document: Section 4.3 – we've clarified that where possible, pupils should attend school before and after medical appointments, and wear their school uniform to appointments Section 4.6 – we've added guidance that you personalise your attendance communications, and frame them around days and experiences missed Section 5.2 – we've clarified that
