Behaviour for learning: strategies (primary)
How can schools promote behaviour for learning? We look at the strategy a primary school uses to encourage behaviour for learning. You will also find guidance on using social and emotional aspects of learning (SEAL), restorative approaches and high-quality teaching to improve behaviour.
Example of a policy
A behaviour for learning policy from Beaford Community Primary and Nursery School lists what the school will do to promote positive learning behaviour on page 1.
- Modelling and teaching the required learning behaviours in class teaching and group sessions across the whole curriculum
- Using personal, social and health education (PSHE) themes to explore behaviour for learning
- Modelling and teaching pupils positive ways to deal with differences of opinion or conflict
On page 2, the policy identifies examples of behaviour that inhibit learning. It sets out strategies the school will use in response, such as using non-verbal or verbal cues to help pupils refocus and providing a change of activity or sensory break.
