What does it mean to be school ready?

It's the set of practical, social, and emotional skills a child needs to settle into school and engage with learning. This includes being able to:

  • Go to the toilet without supervision, including washing hands
  • Get dressed with minimal help – after using the toilet, when putting their coat on or getting changed for PE lessons
  • Self-regulate emotions, particularly when things don't go their way, for example, being able to share
  • Spend time away from parents/carers
  • Listen to and follow instructions
  • Pay attention for short periods of time

For a more comprehensive list of skills, take a look at Starting Reception's checklist (select 'download the PDF').
