What is the process for removing a pupil from our SEND register? In this article, one of our associate experts explains why a child might be taken off the SEN register and suggests ways to communicate this decision to parents. We also include examples of policies on this from schools.

We asked one our associate education experts, Anita Devi, about the process schools should follow when removing a pupil from the special educational needs and disability (SEND) register. Anita is an education consultant who specialises in special educational needs (SEN).

Step 1: establish whether the pupil has SEN

Anita said that the first step is to ensure the pupil does not have SEN. You should:

  • Identify why the pupil was put on the SEN register in the first place
  • Assure yourself that they will be able to achieve their identified outcomes through 'quality first teaching' once they have been removed from the register

This means knowing what quality first teaching involves and understanding the range of catch-up interventions that you can offer independent of 'SEN support’.
