The aims of the phonics programme include for pupils to: 

  • Become readers for life 
  • Develop vocabulary  
  • Apply phonic knowledge to reading and writing 

The statement also covers:

  • How the school will cover phonics at the foundation stage and Key Stage 1 
  • The 6 phases of phonics 
  • Assessment 

Special school in Kent

Abbey Court School covers phonics on pages 18 and 19 of its English policy. The school's aims include to: 

  • Differentiate phonics activities according to pupils' developing abilities and interests
  • Encourage pupils to 'play' with sounds
  • Facilitate communication sessions with pupils with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD)
