Tracking progress: collecting and analysing data
Our associate education expert explains how you can develop a system for tracking pupil attainment and progress. We explain how to approach data collection, which data to collect and how to analyse it.
We asked one of our associate education experts, David Driscoll, how school leaders can develop a tracking system to collect and analyse data about pupils' attainment and progress, within and across subject areas. David is experienced in working with schools to analyse their data to support school improvement.
We summarise David's advice below. The examples he gives focus on secondary schools but much of the advice may be applicable to primary schools too.
How to approach data collection
A tracking system is only as good as the data going into it. Therefore, you should ensure its tracking data will meet the intended purpose before doing any analysis. When planning how you will collect data:
Data should be comparable
This might mean, for example, tracking the attainment and progress of pupils in years 10 and 11 using GCSE grades
