This guidance is based on the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD).

The STPCD applies to:

  • Teachers in maintained schools
  • Teachers whose employment transferred to an academy at the point of conversion

Academies can set their own pay and conditions for new staff, or renegotiate with existing staff.

If your teachers are not employed under the STPCD, check their individual contracts of employment as different requirements may be set out there.

You don’t always have to pay SENCOs more

There’s no payment or allowance specifically designed for special educational needs co-ordinators (SENCOs) under the STPCD and you don't have to award a pay increase to a newly qualified SENCO.

However, if your SENCO is a classroom teacher, they may be eligible for 2 other types of additional payments:

A ‘classroom teacher’ is 'a qualified teacher who is not a member of the leadership group
