Your SENCO may be eligible for TLR or SEN pay awards. Find out more about these allowances and when you can award them.

This guidance is based on the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD).

Academies don’t have to follow the terms of the STPCD, unless their teachers’ employment terms transferred to an academy at the point of conversion. 

If your teachers are not employed under the STPCD, check their individual contracts of employment as different requirements may be set out there.

You don’t always have to pay SENCOs more

There’s no payment or allowance specifically designed for special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) under the STPCD and you don't have to award a pay increase to a newly qualified SENCO.

However, a SENCO may be eligible for 2 other types of additional payments: 

  • Teaching and learning responsibility (TLR) payments
  • Special educational needs (SEN) allowances
