Set objectives with reference to professional standards
The Teachers’ Standards apply to most teachers in maintained schools (see an overview of what this means here). When you’re setting performance objectives, you should account for:
- Each teacher’s job description
- Their responsibilities
- Their role within the school
You may wish to use the Teachers’ Standards for early years. These standards are meant for those working towards Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS), and set out professional and personal requirements and objectives for early years teachers (pages 2-5).
Use the EYFS framework to inform performance objectives
The EYFS framework sets out 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas of children’s learning that are important for early years teaching. These are:
Prime:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
Specific:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
