From 1 April 2026, all schools should have a policy on the use of restrictive interventions.
Our model policy meets the requirements and best practice set out in the DfE's restrictive interventions guidance.
It has been approved by Forbes Solicitors, and is designed for you to adapt to suit your school’s context.
Please note: this model policy has been created with maintained schools and academies in mind, but it can be adapted to suit any school. If you wish to use it in a different type of setting – for example, a pupil referral unit (PRU) or non-maintained special school – we recommend you check it against any requirements or considerations specific to your context and adapt it accordingly.
Your policy should align with your school's legal duties, including its obligations under the Human Rights Act 1998, Equality
