EYFS: how to report to parents/carers

All early years providers must report to parents/carers when pupils are aged 2, and at the end of the EYFS. Find out what you need to include in these reports and use our templates – based on the most recent EYFS framework – to help you write them.

Provide parents/carers with 2 written progress reports 

Provide these reports:

  • When the child is aged between 2 and 3 (known as the 'progress check at age 2'), and
  • At the end of the EYFS (known as the 'EYFS profile', or 'EYFSP')

This is explained on pages 18 to 20 of the DfE’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework.

What to report to parents/carers of 2-year-olds 

You must give parents and carers a short written summary of their child's development in the prime areas:

  • Communication and language 
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development  

Identify the child’s strengths in these areas, and any areas where their progress is less than expected.
