Questions about your curriculum

Ofsted inspectors will talk to your teachers during 'deep dives' into specific subjects – teachers will mostly be asked these questions in groups after lesson observations.

Download and share the list below with your primary teachers so they know what deep dive questions inspectors might ask.

This resource is based on recent inspections of 8 primary schools under the new Ofsted framework – the questions have been similar in all subjects across these inspections.

The exception is reading in primary schools, where inspectors have asked teachers more specific, tailored questions. Use our list to help teachers be ready for these.

Secondary schools: tell us about your experiences

We're keeping an eye out for secondary schools that have been recently inspected, and we'll adapt the list when we have more secondary-specific questions.

Other questions

Questions for teachers will likely focus on the curriculum, but inspectors will also ask them about other areas, either one-on-one or as a group. 

The KeyDoc below includes questions on:

  • Personal development
  • Behaviour and attitudes 
  • Leadership and management
  • Safeguarding

Tip: this is a long list of questions, so teachers don't necessarily need to prepare for all of them. However, based on our experience, inspectors are likely to: 

  • Ask teachers about safeguarding
  • Talk to newly qualified teachers (NQTs) about behaviour, so make sure your NQTs are confident in this area

You may also want to focus prep time by identifying the areas inspectors are most likely to be interested in concerning your school. Read the last section of this article to find out how.

Preparing your teaching assistants (TAs) and support staff

There's a chance that inspectors will talk to your TAs and support staff about school culture in relation to pupils' behaviour, support for staff and other systems. 

Make sure they're confident in answering questions about:

  • School vision and ethos
  • Safeguarding procedures
  • Behaviour expectations
  • The involvement TAs have in planning lessons and intervention classes 
  • Pupils' needs, including:
    • Special educational needs and/or disabilities
    • More able pupils
    • Pupil premium
    • Pupils with English as an additional language 
  • Duties and expectations of a TA in a class
  • Communication with pupils, staff and parents
  • Health and safety procedures

Alvin Jeffs has worked in special education for more than 40 years. His experience includes class teaching, assessment work, and developing and implementing programmes of work for students. He is also a former school inspector.

Gulshan Kayembe is an independent consultant who has experience of inspecting schools. As a consultant, she provides mentoring for senior leaders and has worked as an external adviser on headteachers’ performance management.
