Use this presentation to train your staff on their responsibilities under the DfE's new guidance on restrictive interventions, including reasonable force and seclusion, effective from 1 April 2026.

The training slides are adaptable so you can personalise them to your school's context.

You'll cover:

  • What restrictive interventions are, including reasonable force and seclusion
  • What to consider before using restrictive interventions 
  • How to use restrictive interventions safely and lawfully, if staff need to use them 
  • Staff's roles and responsibilities, including your school's recording and reporting requirements 
  • How to use preventative strategies and de-escalation techniques effectively

This briefing can be delivered by your designated safeguarding lead, headteacher, special educational needs co-ordinator or another member of your senior leadership team. 

The training should take around 1 hour 15 minutes to deliver.
