Use our templates to make sure staff are marking work consistently

Download the documents below to help you create standardised writing samples for Key Stage (KS) 1 and KS2 English. Use them to: 

  • Demonstrate how pupils' writing samples meet the age-related attainment targets in the National Curriculum (see these targets in the KS1 and KS2 English programmes of study)
  • Help you explain how you've collected writing samples and checked them for accuracy

Adapt the templates to suit your school’s assessment system. We've included instructions and prompts (highlighted in yellow) to help you fill them in. 

Cover sheet for a set of writing samples 

Use this template to record information about a whole set of samples, for example any comments about moderation sessions to check that samples were market consistently.
