The DfE has published an update to the EYFS statutory framework, effective from 1 September 2026. We've summarised the changes below, and included where you can find out more in the updated framework.
Children must be placed on their back in a separate sleep space on a firm, flat surface, such as a cot, bed or mattress on the floor Babies 12 months and under must only be placed to sleep in a cot Sleep spaces must have a firm, flat, waterproof mattress with lightweight bedding firmly tucked in below the shoulders to prevent head covering, or a well-fitted baby sleep bag Where blankets are used, the child must be placed feet-to-foot at the bottom of the cot, with blankets tucked in Cots must not contain extra items like toys, pillows, bumpers, wedges or extra blankets Babies under 6 months old must always have an adult
