Additional payments for headteachers

Headteachers can receive temporary payments on top of their salary, and may still receive discretionary payments given to them in the past. Includes guidance from the STPCD and the DfE.

The School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) applies to:

  • Headteachers in maintained schools
  • Headteachers whose employment transferred to an academy at the point of conversion and whose terms have not since been renegotiated

Academies and free schools are free to determine their own pay and conditions for new staff, or renegotiate pay and conditions of existing staff, but you may choose to follow the STPCD.

Governing boards can award payments for temporary duties

The duties or responsibilities must be: 

  • Clearly temporary, or
  • In addition to the post for which your headteacher's salary was determined

Governing boards cannot take additional payments into consideration when they're determining the headteacher's pay range.
