School staff employed under the STPCD and the Green Book can receive recruitment and retention awards in certain circumstances. Read guidance, including union advice, and download our template letter for notifying staff when you want to grant a payment.

Teachers can receive benefits or payments as a recruitment reward

Teachers employed under the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) can receive payments, financial assistance, support or benefits from the relevant body – usually your school’s governing body – as recruitment or retention incentives.

Incentives can be awarded as considered necessary.

An example could be a salary advance scheme for a rental deposit.

This is explained in paragraph 27.1 (page 30) of the STPCD linked above.

If your school does not follow the terms of the STPCD, you are free to set out your own rules on recruitment and retention awards.

Regular, formal reviews must be held to oversee the process

The review should be held by the relevant body and needs to make clear:

  • The expected duration of these awards
  • The review date after which they may be withdrawn
