How can we calculate the cost of lessons and courses? Three of our associate education experts set out some variables schools should consider when costing lessons, as well as examples of methods to calculate these costs. We also look at working out the curriculum costs of a Key Stage.

Variables to consider when costing a course or lesson

We asked one of our associate education experts, Nazli Hussein, what variables schools could consider if they wanted to work out the cost of a lesson or course.

Nazli explained that there is no single method for calculating the cost of a lesson, as there are many different variables schools could take into account. Depending on the purpose of the calculation, schools may include some of these variables but not others.

Examples of variables to use when calculating an average cost of a lesson or course include:

The make-up of the school's staff

The higher the school's expenditure on teaching staff salaries, the higher the average cost of each lesson or course. Lessons in a school with a large number of teachers at a higher point on the pay range will cost more than a lesson in a school with many newly qualified teachers.
