Early years providers must arrange for staff who work with children to have supervision, to support staff and make sure pupils are safeguarded effectively. Find out what the EYFS framework says about supervision and see how others are putting this into practice.

You must arrange supervision for staff who have contact with children and families 

Effective supervision provides support, coaching and training for early years staff and promotes the interests of your pupils. It should foster a culture of mutual support, teamwork and continuous improvement.

Your supervision arrangements should provide opportunities for staff to:

  • Confidentially discuss any issues, especially around safeguarding - particularly those concerning children’s development or wellbeing, including child protection concerns
  • Identify solutions to address issues as they arise
  • Receive coaching to improve their personal effectiveness

This is set out in paragraphs 3.22 and 3.23 of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework
