Reception baseline assessment

You must administer the reception baseline assessment (RBA) to all new reception pupils in maintained schools and academies. Find out how it works so you're prepared to carry it out.

What is it? 

The reception baseline assessment (RBA) assesses pupils' starting points in: 

  • Early mathematics
  • Early literacy, communication and language

It won't affect the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) profile assessment, which will remain statutory.

What's changed in 2025/26?

From September 2025, you should use your DfE sign-in portal to prepare for, and administer, the assessment. This has replaced the the Baseline ePortal (BeP) used in 2024/25.
