Reception baseline assessment
You must administer the reception baseline assessment (RBA) to all new reception pupils in maintained schools and academies. Find out how it works so you're prepared to carry it out.
School types: All•School phases: Nursery, Primary•Ref: 10702 What is it?
The reception baseline assessment (RBA) assesses pupils' starting points in:
- Early mathematics
- Early literacy, communication and language
It won't affect the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) profile assessment, which will remain statutory.

From September 2025, you should use your DfE sign-in portal to prepare for, and administer, the assessment. This has replaced the the Baseline ePortal (BeP) used in 2024/25.
