What to do before carrying out your learning walk
- Try to identify key questions that you want answered from the walk
- Take a look at the prompts that are included in each of the areas of our templates and decide whether you want to remove any, or add extra prompts to reflect your context
Should I apply Ofsted criteria to learning walks?
You should not use inspection criteria to evaluate individual lessons, but rather to evaluate teaching over time (see paragraph 72 of the Ofsted school inspection handbook). The prompts in the template are provided as an illustration of the features you might see on a learning walk.
Always use evidence from a learning walk alongside other evidence, such as interviews with teachers or work scrutinies.
Ofsted doesn't expect or require you to use its inspection framework to conduct learning walks.
Learning walks should not be used to judge individual teacher
