Before you start …

Decide on a clear focus, e.g. writing for a purpose. Think about:

  • What you're looking for
  • Where you expect to find it

Agree your criteria – keep it age/Key Stage appropriate, and in line with your curriculum expectations. Think about:

  • What good looks like
  • What you want to see

Agree the strategy  e.g. monitoring particular year groups or pupils.

Agree the scope. Think about:

  • What sample of books will you need (considering age, gender, ability etc.)?
  • Is your sample the right size? Too many books means you can’t scrutinise each one enough, too few doesn't give you enough variety

Decide on a work sample – keep this focus led, e.g. sampling higher-ability pupils to monitor greater depth expectations.
