Define the pupil's barriers to attendance
Look over the push and pull factors that you have identified from looking at your data, and conversations with the pupil, their family, and your staff. Our other article, on understanding a pupil’s barriers to attendance, includes a template to help you do this.
List every barrier to attendance (push and pull factors) that you’ve uncovered, regardless of whether you think you’ll be able to do anything about it. This stage is about having an overview of all the barriers, before identifying which problems you can work to solve.
For example, your list might look like the following:
- Anxiety
- Lack of transport
- Being a victim of bullying
- Special educational needs (SEN) not being adequately met
