Are there any examples of handbooks for subject leaders? This article sets out advice from one of our associate education experts, who explains what a subject leader’s handbook could cover. It also points to guidance and suggestions from a school leader and a local authority.

Despite a careful search, we did not find published examples of subject leader handbooks from schools. In this article, we relay advice from one of our associate education experts on what a subject leader handbook could cover.

We spoke to one of our associate education experts, Nina Siddall-Ward, about what should be included in a subject leader handbook.

Nina said that when she works with schools to develop subject leader handbooks, she usually covers the 4 main areas of the subject leader’s role as set out in the national standards for subject leaders. These standards were developed in 1998, but they remain the most recently published standards for the role and are still a useful reference.
