Organise your appraisal cycle using the DfE’s guidance

The DfE has issued new guidance for schools on teacher appraisal that comes into effect from September 2024. The guidance includes a model appraisal policy (pages 11 to 16 of the guidance), to be used alongside the Teachers’ Standards.

The guidance and model policy are based on the Education (School Teachers’ Appraisal) (England) Regulations 2012, which apply to all maintained schools.

Note: all maintained schools must have an appraisal policy.

Academies are free to set their own arrangements for appraisal, but it is good practice to follow the model policy.
