Consider the following criteria to set the most effective performance objectives for your staff:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Realistic
- Timebound
These characteristics will also help you evaluate whether performance objectives have been met.

You should consider the strengths and areas for improvement of your staff when setting targets, to encourage their professional development.
Make sure you think about the needs of your school, especially your school improvement plan (SIP), when creating performance objectives.
