You must:

  • Make sure at least one of the people conducting an interview has completed safer recruitment training*
  • Complete pre-appointment checks on all new members of staff
  • When using the Disclosure and Barring (DBS) Update Service to carry out a status check on an individual:
    • Obtain the individual's consent first
    • Confirm that the certificate matches the individual's identity
    • Examine the original certificate to make sure it is for the appropriate workforce and level of check
  • Where a teacher is dismissed due to serious misconduct, or might have been dismissed had they not left first, consider whether to refer the case to the secretary of state, so they can decide whether to make a prohibition order in respect of the individual
